How to check a used or open-box MacBook before you pay in India

Check six things before you pay: the serial, Activation Lock, the battery, the hardware, the receipt and, if you're in another city, a live video. None of it takes long, and any one of them can save you from a bad buy.

  1. 1

Check the serial number on Apple's coverage site

The serial is under the Apple menu, About This Mac (on newer macOS: System Settings, General, About). It is also printed on the underside of the laptop and on the box. Ask for it before you meet, or read it off the screen when you do.

    • Open checkcoverage.apple.com and type in the serial.
    • It shows the exact model, and whether the Mac has Apple warranty or AppleCare+ and when it ends.
    • If the model, year or warranty doesn't match the listing, stop and ask why.

    How QA Deals does it

Every listing shows the warranty end date, and warranty follows the serial, so you can check the same serial yourself before you pay. You never have to take our word for it.

  2. 2

Make sure Activation Lock and Find My are off

A Mac that is still signed in to the seller's Apple ID can be locked to them, and then it is a very expensive paperweight. A Mac that is safe to buy has been signed out of iCloud, has Find My Mac turned off and has been erased, so it starts at the Setup Assistant (the Hello screen).

    • Ask for it to be erased in front of you: System Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, Erase All Content and Settings.
    • If setup asks for someone else's Apple ID or email, it is locked. Don't pay.
    • On a Mac that is still set up, check that no Apple ID is signed in and that Find My Mac is off. You can also enter the serial at icloud.com/activationlock.
    • Look at System Settings, General, Device Management. A profile there means a company or school can control the Mac.

    How QA Deals does it

In Mumbai you open it and boot it in front of us before any money moves, so you see the Mac as it really is. For a delivery, we show the unit on a video call first.

  3. 3

Look at the battery cycle count and health

Battery wear is the biggest hidden cost on a used laptop. Recent MacBook batteries are rated for 1000 charge cycles, so the count tells you how much of that is already gone.

    • Health: System Settings, Battery, then the info button next to Battery Health. It shows the maximum capacity.
    • Cycle count: hold Option and click the Apple menu, open System Information, then Power. Cycle Count is under Battery Information.
    • A sealed or never-used Mac has no wear to read; ask when it was activated.

    How QA Deals does it

We list battery health on each MacBook, and the cycle count where we have it. Sealed units say so, because there is nothing to wear.

  4. 4

Test the keyboard, trackpad, ports, display and the rest

Spend ten minutes going through the hardware. Faults you find now are the seller's problem; faults you find after paying are yours.

    • Keys and trackpad: type in a text editor, press every key including the function row, and click the trackpad in all four corners. Try Touch ID.
    • Ports and charging: charge it with its own charger and try each USB-C or Thunderbolt port with a cable or drive. Test the headphone jack and any other port it has.
    • Display: fill the screen with white, black and a few solid colours. Look for dead pixels, bright spots, lines, yellow patches and marks along the edges. Move the brightness slider.
    • Sound, camera and wireless: play a sound, record a voice memo, open Photo Booth, join Wi-Fi and pair a Bluetooth device.
    • Body: look for dents, bent corners, a lid that sits unevenly and a bottom case that bulges.

    How QA Deals does it

Condition is stated in plain words (factory sealed, open box, like new or used) and the listing says what is not perfect. In Mumbai you open it, boot it and go through all of this before you pay.

  5. 5

Get a sale receipt that matches the Mac

A receipt is your proof of what you bought and when. You need it for support and when you resell.

    • The seller's name and contact, and the date.
    • Model, year, chip, memory and storage.
    • The serial number. Check it against the one on the Mac and on the coverage site.
    • The price you paid and how you paid.
    • The condition and warranty terms you agreed.

    How QA Deals does it

Every sale comes with a sale receipt with the serial and the price you paid. It is a sale receipt, not a GST tax invoice: the purchase invoice is in the dealer's name, so businesses can't claim input credit. Keep it with the box.

  6. 6

If you can't see it in person, see it on a live video

Buying from another city is safe only if you can see what you are buying. Don't send money until the video matches the listing.

    • Ask for a live video call, not a recording.
    • Have them show the serial in About This Mac and the Mac booting, then check that serial on the coverage site yourself.
    • If someone you trust is in the seller's city, ask them to look at it for you.
    • Ask to watch it being packed, and keep the courier receipt and tracking ID.

    How QA Deals does it

Outside Mumbai we agree the details on WhatsApp, show you the unit and its serial on a video call, take full advance payment, pack it live on video and send you the courier receipt and tracking ID.
